Indeed all praise belongs to Allah, and may his peace and blessings be upon his final Messenger Muhammad ﷺ and his family, his companions and those who follow them until the day of resurrection.
My Muslims Brother’s & Elder’s! today my Khuthbah is Importance of Time in the Life of the Muslim, I advise you and advise myself to fear Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, for if one fears Allah, Time is among the most valuable things in man’s life. Each moment that passes in your life will never come back. Allah swt mentioned in the Quran sura An-Noor: Allah alternates night and day- there truly is a lesson in all this for those who have eyes to see. Another verse in surah AL-E-Imran: Allah swt said: There truly are signs in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of night and day, for those with understanding. We are approaching a new year 2023. It is not a practice recorded in the Sunnah to celebrate this day (i.e., its first day) or to congratulate and greet one another on its occasion. First of all, we thank Allah for the good work we have in the past year in 2022. And we ask forgiveness from Allah Almighty for the wrong and crime we committing.
Brother’s in Islam: We Just bid farewell to a year 2022 that will be a witness for or against us. and It feels like only a few days ago, we were at the beginning of a year and now we are going to start beginning of another new year 2023. A segment of man’s life has just finished and the more days pass by, the closer we draw to the Hereafter. Hasan Al-Basri said: ‘O son of Adam, you are nothing but a number of days, whenever each day passes then part of you has gone. Allah’s favour, be among the best of people.” To highlight the importance of time in Islam, the sermon will give several examples of the sayings of Prophet Mohammed. “It was narrated that a Bedouin told the Prophet, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Who is the best of people?’ He said: ‘He whose life is long and his deeds are good’.” So each one of us should recognise the value of their time and never waste even a minute of it without engaging in beneficial acts. The Prophet said: “There are two blessings which many people lose: In a Hadeeth of Bukhaari, The Prophet ﷺ mentioned two great blessings that people waste and do not use properly, 1. Good Health and 2. free time.” Imam Al-Hasan Al-Basri said: “O son of Adam! You are but a collection of days; whenever a day passes, a part of you ends with it.” Imam Muhammad Ibn Waasi’ was asked: “How are you this morning?” He replied: “What can the condition of a man be who draws closer to the Hereafter with every passing day?
He who knows that he is a slave that belongs to Allah and realizes that he will return to Him must know that he will stand before Him; he who knows that he will stand before his Lord must realize that he will be questioned; if he knows that he will be questioned, then he must prepare answers for these questions.” The man asked: “What can one do about it?” Al-Fudhayl replied: “It is simple: act righteously in what remains of your life and you will be forgiven for what sins you committed in the past; otherwise, you will be punished for what remains as well as what has passed of your life”.
My Respected Brother’s: What did we deposit in our accounts for this year? What are we preparing for the impending one? The days will bear witness against man regarding what he deposited in them, whether good or bad. Imam Al-Hasan Al-Basri said: “Every new day exclaims: O son of Adam! I am a new creation and will testify for what you perform in me, so take from me provision (in terms of good deeds) because once I depart, I shall not return until the Day of Resurrection.”
Those who truly understand this will be grateful for the blessing of time. One ways to appreciate the time Allaah has blessed us with is to spend it in reaching beneficial goals and making ourselves better. Therefore, a person should set goals for himself and then organise his days and his time so that he can be productive and work towards them effectively without wasting time.
If you waste time you will miss out on achieving many things that you could have done. And this is something that people often regret and realise when it is too late. When they are middle aged, they regret the time they wasted as youths. When they are old, they regret the time they wasted when they were middle aged and younger. And of course, those who wasted all their time and their whole life, then they will regret it after they die. The Youthful is the peak stage in human life, because young people have the energy to do lots of things, but when they get older, their energy will reduce and commitments will increase, and they will find that they cannot do what they once could’ve when they were young.
So each one of us should recognise the value of their time and never waste even a minute of it. Every moment should be spent doing something beneficial for your dunya or your aakhirah. Even if you are sitting and waiting, then you can benefit and invest from your time by doing dhikr. It is very easy and can always be done; when walking, driving, sitting in a gathering.
If we do not use our time effectively for something good, then we will end up using it for something bad. If you do not spend your time busying yourself with reading and studying the Quran and the seerah of the Prophet ﷺ, then you will spend it watching TV and movies that have lots of bad things which have no benefit and they waste a person’s time. Or They spend their time in idle talk, in backbiting and so on. Ask yourself at the end of each day: What did I do today? What did I do that was bad today? How much time did I waste, and how can I avoid making the same mistake in the future? And then you should repent for the wrong you did.
My Brother’s in Islam: Life is very short. Death is very near and can grab us at any time. We do not know when we are going to die, so we have to make sure that we do as many good deeds as possible before die and go to the next life. We
may wait and say I will have fun now and when I get older I will read Quran and worship Allah. But realise my brothers that the reality is that you may never reach the old age that you are imagining about.
Allah says: وَیَوۡمَ یَحۡشُرُهُمۡ كَأَن لَّمۡ یَلۡبَثُوۤا۟ إِلَّا سَاعَةࣰ مِّنَ ٱلنَّهَارِ “And on the Day when He shall gather them together, (it will be) as if they had not stayed (in the life of this world and graves, etc) but an hour of a day.” [Quran 10:45]. Allah said قَـٰلَ كَمۡ لَبِثۡتُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ عَدَدَ سِنِینَ How many years were you on earth, and they will reply, we stayed a day or part of a day. When we die, we are unable to return to this life in order to repent from our bad deeds, or to do more good deeds. Some people will say at the time of death “My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous.” But then Allah says “Allah will never delay a soul when its time has come.”. After you die, there is no more time for you do try and do good.
O’ Allah! Bless us to perform good deeds and Make the new year one of unity all Muslims Nation, cooperation and success for Muslims in this country and around the world. And keep safe us from any kind of evil diseases, May Allaah سبحانه وتعالى guide us and give us tawfeeq to spend our time and wealth in that which is beneficial and will help us become closer to him. May Allaah سبحانه وتعالى safe us from wasting our time in sins and in things of no benefit. Finally I pray to Allah swt to make this new year peaceful and safe for each of us. Ameen.
